okay so since chickens lay eggs with or without a rooster.. if a vegan owns chickens, WHAT DO THEY DO WITH THE EGGS? they obviously “can’t” eat them… but wouldn’t selling them be unethical? and throwing them away if a damn waste… i don’t understand so i’m legitimately curious.

Without a rooster present the eggs are unfertilized and thus would not become chicks—if we’re talking about the ethics of not eating something that could be alive than I would think there wouldn’t be too much of a problem since the unfertilized eggs could never become chicks. I don’t think selling them would be unethical on those grounds. What’s inside the egg could never be alive because it was never fertilized.

4thcoming:

“Sir, what you had there was what we refer to as a Focused, Non-Terminal, Repeating Phantasm, or a Class 5 Full-Roaming Vapor … a real nasty one too”

Classification System

“A clear list system was made in Ghostbuster RPG, which is the standard most fans go by. The class system is known mostly as list of seven classes that a paranormal event can be labeled to better understand and deal with.

Class I

These are undeveloped forms, insubstantial and difficult to see. Interaction with their environment is limited and enigmatic (i.e., spectral lights, voices and sounds, ectoplasmic vapors, etc.). Simple application of a proton pack beam is normally effective.

Class II

Manifestations focused in this time and space, Class II ghosts and up can physically manipulate things in this world. These forms are vague, inconsistent, or incomplete (i.e., floating sheets, ghostly hands, animated lips, etc.). Although a proton pack beam is normally effective, some Class II ghosts have the capacity to return attacks.

Class III

Anonymous Hauntings. Distinct human form and personality is evident, but former identity (I.E., as a living being.) is not established. If established, ghost is reassigned as Class IV. Often difficult to deal with, Class III ghosts generally possess sophisticated means of defense.

Class IV

Identity is established. They have a distinct human form and personality with known identity, such as General Custer or Cleopatra. Economic disposal methods include research into the background of said entity, as well as possible communication with it.

Class V

These are Ectoplasmic manifestations of definite but non-human form. Speculation includes the theory that Class V’s are formed from emotionally-charged events or as side effects from ritual summoning (Slimer was a by-product of the rituals that a cult held in the Sedgewick Hotel’s basement.). These typically require extensive proton pack implementation to eradicate.

Class VI

Ghosts from lower life forms. A giant penguin was once seen attacking a mugger in Central Park. Later it was discovered that the penguin was a ghost. Unique solutions are often required to handle these entities, including research into habitats, allergies, natural enemies, etc.

Class VII

Metaspectres. Obsessively malevolent, exceptionally powerful, and exhibiting control over subordinate forms, such entities are potentially very dangerous. These are often identified by primitive cultures as “Demons”. Entitles which fit this classification include Gozer and Zuul. Neutralizing them is usually a problematical undertaking at best. Most standard procedures are futile. The most realistic plan is to take measures to prevent these things from entering the sphere of influence in the first place.”

More Ghostbuster rambling because I can.

One of the more amazing things this franchise did that I’m not sure anyone realized was that it poked at the idea that in order to be a successful franchise for kids, the main characters have to be kids themselves.

Even as a teenager, it always sort of…

Actually, this is something I noticed with the Real Ghostbusters which followed the four from the movies. Same basic thing of running a (admittedly odd) business and being adults, but they could joke around and have adventures. To this day, I adore the show, the original movies, and Extreme Ghostbusters because of this whole thing.

Of course, you put it into words much better than I could’ve.

You know in a lot of ways the mundane nature of their lives is something I always enjoyed, because at the end of the day, these guys are exterminators.

What they exterminate is a little different from what most people have to deal with, but you could see these guys on World’s Dirtiest Jobs. The way the subject is approached is so genuinely down to earth it kinda takes the banality out of it and instills a weird sort of enjoyment and even dignity to what at the end of the day is a pretty red-collar, messy, exhausting, exasperating job.

Come on guys, suck in the guts, we’re the Ghostbusters as Venkman would say.

On another level you could see the movies as a way of raising the status of the exterminating profession, which is a nice bit of social commentary in it’s own right.

I think what I took away from it the most was the sense of family. These guys were brothers in all but blood. They had each others’ backs no matter how dangerous the task.

Considering the movie’s been out thirty-plus years, I don’t think I’m spoiling anything when I mention how at the Sedgewick Hotel (spelling?) Egon first introduced the idea that crossing the streams was “very bad”. He even said it’d cause a person’s molecules to simply fly apart. This is an important “safety tip” that I imagine they passed on to Winston after he joined the company. Yet to stop Gozer, what is it they have to do? Cross the streams, and not one of them said “Too rich for my blood. I’m out.” They were all willing to face likely death together, side-by-side.

The first cartoon series also showed a lot of them living together, not just working together. It fleshed out that sense of family that going back to re-watch makes me smile. They bicker over mundane things like whose turn it is to cook and even make up games to make chores more interesting. (Laundry ball, for example.) Yes, the franchise had action and adventure, but it balanced it out with the characters’ normal lives. To me, it showed that you didn’t have to have some great prophecy or special powers to be a hero. If you had the know-how and determination to see things through, you could become one in the right circumstances. Most importantly if you have the people you care for backing you up. Sappy? Maybe, but it did give me some hope.

Not sure if you’re into fanfiction or not, but I highly recommend Sheila Paulsen’s Real Ghostbusters fanzine stories. They really bring out that whole family/everyday hero vibe.

First of all: I have been looking for good fic for ages, so thanks for the recs. Second of all, yeah, the sense of family and brotherhood is such an intense cornerstone of the characters’ dynamics, it’s really impossible to ignore when talking about the franchise as a whole.

The one line that always struck me—and they elaborate on this gloriously in the comic—is that when it comes down to crossing the streams, it’s not just that they all agree to it, they are hesitant, but the one who shrugs potential molecular dispersal off first is Venkman. It’s one line. He looks at Ray, slaps him on the shoulder and says, “I love this plan, I’m excited to be a part of it!” and that’s literally all it takes. In one line it shows exactly how much Peter has Egon’s back, and his ability to sway the others out of indecision.

Honestly until the comic, Peter was my least favorite. I think Murray just played the used car salesman side of his personality a little too well, but for that one line in the end of the first movie, and how they flesh him out in the comic (like having him make use of his dual doctorate degrees) kinda made me fall in love with him for the first time.

The family dynamic is there in spades in the comic, and in Winston’s case goes so far as to show him starting to branch out and create a family of his own outside of the other three, which is a joy to read. (Also the dynamic between Egon and Janine is as awkward, adorable and frustrating as ever, watching them try to work things out is a treat if you don’t mind wincing at how they’re still walking on eggshells around each other emotionally.) Peter has a maybe-sorta love interest, but we know how those tend to go, the only interesting thing is that at current she’s a main part of the cast and the writer has no plans to ditch her any time soon. Oh, and Kylie is around. The family has grown exponentially in the comic, so if that’s what you’re interested in, I can’t recommend it more. It takes what the movies and the cartoon gave us and hits the ground running, and so far hasn’t slowed down to take a breath yet.

cybra-sensei:

There really should have been a Ghostbusters/X-Files crossover comic book at some point in time. And according to Google: There wasn’t.

Maybe that’s why I’m sad inside?

Well seeing as IDW has both properties right now your wish still has a chance to come true.

Don’t be sad, there’s still hope!

"But ask yourself: Why is there that knee-jerk rejection of any effort to “overthink” pop culture?..."

“
But ask yourself: Why is there that knee-jerk rejection of any effort to “overthink” pop culture? Why would you ever be afraid that looking too hard at something will ruin it? If the government built a huge, mysterious device in the middle of your town and immediately surrounded it with a fence that said, “NOTHING TO SEE HERE!” I’m pretty damned sure you wouldn’t rest until you knew what the hell that was — the fact that they don’t want you to know means it can’t be good.

Well, when any idea in your brain defends itself with “Just relax! Don’t look too close!” you should immediately be just as suspicious. It usually means something ugly is hiding there.
”

-
- David Wong

One of the more amazing things this franchise did that I’m not sure anyone realized was that it poked at the idea that in order to be a successful franchise for kids, the main characters have to be kids themselves.

Even as a teenager, it always sort of baffled me that all the heroes in the cartoons I watched were (on the surface) just like me. Few of them were disabled and fewer of them were girls but they were all kids, and outside of the superhero genre I never saw adults going on incredible, epic adventures.

As if after a point in your life it just wasn’t possible.

This was something that would keep me up at night. A future where I was grown and somehow barred from the possibility of having the same chance at wild adventure and epic stories to tell when I returned honestly scared me. It’s the same reason why it makes me sad to see people disappointed they never got their Hogwarts acceptance letter. I refused to believe magic had an experiation date of 18 years.

And then along came Ghostbusters. I have to preamble this to say I was born in 1985 and first saw the original movie when I was six or seven. I may have even seen the second one first. Either way, there was something there I never realised I was looking at until years later: adults having adventures.

And not the gritter, darker, edgier kind of adventures that seem to be all that’s available these days—these characters, these men laughed and joked and had bonds with each other that were natural; well-established. Even when they took a stranger into the fold (Winston Zeddmore) they never really lost that camaraderie because that stranger came to fit in as though he’d always been there. He laughed with them, he went through hell and back grinning with them, as an adult.

None of these men were young, and as the franchise has ages, various incarnations have taken no issue with continuing to age them and dealing with the issues that arise from that. These are mortal men. Mortal adult men who aren’t bitter or cynical, who are still having adventures after all these years.

Even in the cartoon adaption, the “new” team is college age, with all of the responsibilities that go along with that. They aren’t teenagers who have all the time in the world for their adventures—life does get in the way—but it never stops them from having them.

It’s been a tenant for a long time now that the protagonists of cartoon have to be children because adults have adult adventures that aren’t suitable for kids—which is where my gripe in the last entry comes in, that ‘kid friendly’ means playing things for laughs that cheapen the over all message.

The industry used to know this. There used to be plenty of cartoons and comics with adult protagnists that were meant for kids and didn’t talk down to them, and if that kid was anything like me, showed me that adventure and magic and the extraordinary didn’t have an expiration date.

zalein:

If you go to google scholar and type in ‘ghost detection’ you come up with a huge list of ‘let’s get these damn ghosts out of our video surveillance systems’

And I know that it’s actually talking about a whole slew of errors that happens in motion detection or fake signals or etc, but if you imagine that ghosts are real and they’re actually trying to get rid of all this clutter or rude crowding from obnoxious ghosts everything becomes 100% funnier

And now all I can imagine are ghosts making asses out of themselves on surveillance cameras just to screw with a bunch of bored night security. I’m talking about the age where everything had to be EXTREME—and yeah, we laugh at it now because so much of it was ridiculous— but there was something to it. EXTREME wasn’t just a marketing ploy, it denoted a method of storytelling that did something cartoons weren’t supposed to do at the time: address real, relatable human problems and dramas. It opened the floodgate to the “darker and edgier” mess that permeates media now, but that’s a post for another time. Maybe.

The unique thing about being a kid in the 90’s that I’m just really starting to appreciate is the lack of sugar-coating in the media we consumed. I never realized how much I took it for granted that you had a show about guys who ran around catching ghosts that also addressed problems of racism, ableism, aging, urban violence and a host of other problems that anymore are either swept under the rug or couched in humor (“played for laughs,” to use the tv tropes term.)

And as much as everyone groans and rolls their eyes at the multi-ethnic, politically correct casts that dominated the time, Extreme Ghostbusters in particular stands out as a case where a non-able-bodied character was, hands down, one of the most popular characters on the show. Hell, even the show’s predecessor touched on the topics of work-related stress, PTSD, and adult relationships in a way that you don’t really see these days. (At least see in a way that isn’t laughed off as being a joke/harmless when it really shouldn’t be.)

I can’t really remember when things changed. When the backlash against “extreme” started to create animated stories and narratives that couched and coddled some very powerful messages and morals—I was probably deep into anime at the time and not really paying attention to American cartoons. Whatever switch flipped, I missed it. Maybe it was because of anime that the switch flipped in the first place, and only now are we starting to get hints at that pre-darker-edgier-grittier story telling that managed a balance between real human drama and the kind of hopeful escapism the 90’s still had in spades. Because the main difference between EXTREME and Darker and Edgier or Played for Laughs is that EXTREME always left room for hope—the heroes came out on top and there was no lingering, nihilistic aftertaste. Or, on the other hand, the heroes came out on top without the entire ordeal being laughed off in the end, as though the writers were suddenly stepping in to say “we didn’t mean it!” Because let’s face it, the problem with trying to laugh certain things off, is, well…they’re not actually funny. And making them funny benefits no one.

The more I look at it, the more I’m coming to realize EXTREME maybe wasn’t always the joke it’s become over the years. It began as something genuinely meaningful, even if I wasn’t able to appreciate it at the time. I wasn’t being talked down to by the media I consumed, which is more than I can say for 95% of what’s out there now.

sweaterkittensahoy:

The internet died for a few days and I discovered (or perhaps rediscovered) something I already suspected: after a few days, I was happier without being tethered to it.

I was forced to remember that I didn’t have a home internet access until I was fifteen, and yeah…

So I’m gonna cut back on my ‘net time from here on out. Likely I will be around in the morning and the evening, but not very often in between.

I JUST LOVE HOW YOUNG ONE DOESN’T HAVE A FUCKING NAME

I’m just wondering how the kids refer to each other before puberty. Seriously, and can you picture if a Revonnahgander had twins? Or even just multiple small children at the same time! “Will all the children of the Rook family come forward, so I can get a hold of the one I need to beat?”

For some reason I can’t picture them going the “boy” and “you there” routes…

“Young One No. Three, it’s your turn to do the dishes!”

“Mom, I did them last time! Make Young One No. One do them!”

“Third child, get over here!”

It’s possible naming doesn’t happen before a certain age, not until they lose their tail, perhaps? The losing of the tail likely signifies a step into adulthood and thus, contributing more to the community as a whole. Being given an individual identity likely goes hand in hand with that first step.

mscottwrites:

Moving Beyond Outrage: The Real Solution to Women In Comics
a open letter from a comic book professional

[Note: This letter expresses my own personal opinion and not that of any of my employers or professional partners past or present. ]

“We need more women in comics!” Such has been the rallying cry of the consumer and media for the last several years. One I wholeheartedly agree with, but the real problem of women being underrepresented in comics is increasingly being offered fake solutions and the comic book media is as much the problem as the big publishers.

Allow me to explain:

1. The Big Two (Marvel and DC) have very few women on staff (let’s leave female characters aside for now and just focus at who’s sitting at the creative table, particularly writers and pencilers).
2. This is noticed by the comics media, who respond with outrage.
3. The media advocates for the Big Two to hire more women, but only names the same handful of established professionals, many of whom have already worked for the Big Two (or worse, encourages them to seek an unknown woman with little or no professional track record). Smaller, working comics pros are ignored.
4. The Big Two (having already employed at least some of the only women being advocated for) feel no need to add more female creators to their roster. Smaller, working comics pros continue to be ignored.
5. Steps 2-4 become a vicious and unending cycle.

This is my very simplified thesis and I can tell you as a female comics professional, it is a crushing burden to bear.

When I started writing on IDW’s Transformers line I reached out to both journalists and bloggers who had written about “women in comics” as well as Transformers news sites to trumpet that I was the first women to write professionally for the TF brand in comics (and, obviously, that they should buy said comics because of that).

The response from the fansites was overwhelming positive, but the response from the general news sites and “advocates” was…nothing. In fact the few who bothered to respond to my requests for an interview/review/anything said they were happy I’d achieved such a milestone, liked my work but “just weren’t into” Transformers as a brand.

This was obviously a slap in the face, but it is by no means a unique story. In fact the more I talked to women (and marketing departments) in comics, the more I found that the media is only interested in promoting women who write/draw the right kind of comics. Women at IDW, Boom, and other working professionals are being ignored in favor of the ultra-established and the ultra-indie. Our books are too male, or too all ages to get attention. The fact that Boom! employs about as many (if not more) female writers/artists than DC and that IDW’s Hasbro panel at WonderCon was majority female go completely unnoticed. The women who put out books through Archaia are equally ignored. Yet everyone is constantly asking, “Where are the women?” The answer: RIGHT HERE!

Now, I don’t feel that the media should be forced to cover me or any woman, but the premiere companies outside of the Big Two are hotbed recruiting spots for new talent. If people want to get more women in the doors of DC they need to be looking at the companies who feed talent into DC. Look at Boom! Valiant, Dark Horse, Archaia, Oni, Dynamite, IDW. If you like their female creators, say so. If you don’t, say so. If they don’t have any, say so. But please please please don’t call yourself an advocate for women in comic books while rendering invisible most of the women who are already here.

Sincerely,
Mairghread Scott

If anyone needed another reason to look into IDW…

This woman is a wise voice in an largely unreasonable industry.

It’s an honor to have you on Tumblr, Ms. Scott.

Attention Generator Rex Fans!

You know, we’ve managed some great things in the past— getting the show back on the tv to air to completion is no small feat. I was never prouder to be part of a fandom than when we managed that.

But there’s more to do!

A few months back, news came around that comic book publishers IDW had gotten the rights to a bunch of Cartoon Network properties, including Generator Rex. For those of you unfamiliar with IDW, they publish a number of comics with very old, and well established fandoms like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Transformers, Ghostbusters, Star Trek and Dr. Who. Most anyone I’ve known from any of these fandoms have generally had nothing but good things to say about how these franchises are being handled.

Draqua, if I’m not mistaken, you’re reading/keeping up with Transformers, yes?

I first started following IDW for TMNT, but in the last two weeks have devoured the Burnham/Shoening/Delgado Ghostbusters comics. These men are rare talents.

But what does this have to do with GR, why should it matter that someone else has the rights?

Because if anyone can do MoA’s vision for Generator Rex justice, it is the pool of talent at IDW. And we should let them know how much it means that they treat this series right.

The “IDW Projects” subforum on their website www.idwpublishing.com is a place to talk about newly solicited books and projects—I’d like to lead a charge to start hyping Generator Rex now, ask questions…if you’re already a fan of IDW, which artists and writers would you like to see work on GR? The mods of the forums are incredibly gracious and likely to address our questions and concerns for the future of Generator Rex— the next revolution is in our hands.

Let’s start it off right.

colferbrian:
